   Par de termos que caracteriza abordagens opostas para o estudo dos dados lingüísticos. Na abordagem ética, os padrões físicos da língua são descritos com referência mínima à sua função dentro do sistema da língua. A abordagem êmica, ao contrário, se interessa por todas as relações funcionais, estabelecendo um sistema fechado de unidades contrastivas abstratas como base de descrição.
